Munich Airport at its current site opened in 1992. Services from Munich were previously at Munich-Riems. The second terminal was opened in 2003. The airport is officially called Franz Josef Straub Airport but this name is rarely used, this was named after Franz Straub the long time president of Bavaria.

On 05 January 2004 an Austrian Airlines Fokker 70 landed 4.6 kilometres short of the runway in a field damaging the aircraft. This was due to severe icing on the aircraft during its flight. None of the aircraft's occupants were harmed in the accident.
